"Black-and-white sgraffito ceramic art features high-contrast designs created by carving through a dark underglaze layer to reveal the white clay beneath. Sgraffito is an Italian word meaning ‘scratching’. As an artist, the carving process is meditative while the result is striking - especially with a high-gloss clear glaze. The black-and-white contrast creates strong visual drama. I love that the technique has ancient roots dating to the 10th century and is popular today!

Ceramics stand out from other art forms because of their tactile nature. We can interact with ceramic art physically - we can hold it in our hands and incorporate it into our daily lives. Working with clay and the sgraffito process combines physical, mental, and emotional aspects perfectly."
